A Nation’s Pastime

Many children dream of becoming the next great homerun slugger, and now those dreams can be lived out in baseball board games for children.

Baseball Board Games for Children

You can’t always step out on the diamond and knock a few over the fence, and sometimes smaller children just want some of the action. What better way to get them into the sport of baseball by playing a board game based on it? Maybe they already play in a league and with winter setting in they need to get their fix. Baseball board games for children were created to hopefully capture the essence of the game for them and the family.

Statis-Pro

Statis-Pro is an old game that was created in the 70's but still remains a lot of fun. Produced by Avalon Hill it is now out of print but may be able to be bought off of eBay. You assume the role of a manager of a baseball team with many options available to you. You get pitcher and batter cards and can play an entire season of baseball with individual games taking under 30 minutes. The game offers limited defensive options which allows single player games to be as fun as play with a second player.

Superstar! Baseball

Another offering from Avalon Hill (purchased from Time, Inc. i.e. Sports Illustrated), Superstar! Baseball was printed in the early 1970’s and may also be found on eBay. The game should be considered a very easy game to play to intermediate. The game had with all of the teams from that era and included 25 best of the best players to have all-star play.

Pennant Race

Published in 1981 by Avalon Hill (as part of the Sports Illustrated line), Pennant Race was discontinued in 1984. The game only had three seasons worth of player cards created. Instead of going one batter at a time, play is determined by rolling dice making it simple for most players to understand. This method of play allowed a full 9-innings of play being determined in about a minute. The game is a bit more advanced so play for younger children may prove difficult as you can use strategy to negotiate trades and call rookies up from the minors.

Pursue the Pennant

Released in 1988, Pursue the Pennant is more advanced and suitable for children around 10 or 11. A single 9-inning game can last nearly an hour and consists of rolling dice and takes many factors into play including speed and defensive skills of the players. Pursue the Pennant is one of the more realistic games that you can find that includes many charts and tables in order to play the game.

Baseball Game in a Tin

Produced by Tin World, Baseball Game in a Tin is very simple to play. It is meant for two players, and all you need to do is roll the dice in order to get certain combinations. These rolls of the dice would determine how many outs or hits you get. The game can be played in about 15 minutes.

Baseball's Board Game

Baseball's Board Game is suitable for children ages 10 and up and for two players. The game is very easy to learn and is played on a baseball diamond game board. You use two dice and chips to represent the players. There is a scoreboard to keep track of the runs and outs. You are also given a score sheet where you can write down the type of hit and other things.

Front Porch Classics Baseball

Reminiscent of penny arcade baseball games, Front Porch Classics Baseball is suitable for nearly any aged player. You use a metal ball (much like those found in pinball machines) and a wood striking device. You swat the ball around the field to make hits and earn runs. You can buy the game from their website and have it emblazoned with the logos of MLB team of your choice.

Final Word

Baseball is played in many countries and is a recognized summer Olympic sport. Baseball board games for children are numerous, although finding the right one (and one still in print) may prove harder than searching for other types of board games. Looking on eBay and Amazon can be good sources to find those out of print games. Board Game Geek is another great resource that catalogs nearly every board game you can imagine.
