Battleship Folio

From LoveToKnow BoardGames

Battleship has been a favorite board game for years, and now it can be taken on the road with the release of the Battleship Folio edition.

Brief History of Battleship

The game of Battleship is a guessing game that has been around before World War I. The original version of the game was played with pen and paper on a 10 x 10 numbered and lettered coordinate grid. At this time the game was known as "Salvo" and was created by Clifford Von Wickler, but he failed to patent the game. The game was picked up by Milton Bradley which renamed the game "Broadsides, the Game of Naval Strategy" and published it as a paper game in 1943.

As the years went on, the game began to change and received needed updates. The paper tablets changed to plastic grids and pegs that were contained in two hard plastic cases. Electronic Battleship soon came along which made cheating less easy to get away with. Portable editions of the game began to emerge which now includes Battleship Folio.

Battleship Folio

Battleship Folio edition represents a new, portable Battleship game that is very much like classic Battleship. It's still one of the most loved strategic board games on the market today.

Playing Battleship Folio

You've sunk my battleship.

Battleship Folio is played using 4 10x10 grids with each player using two grids in order to play the game. The top grid is used to mark your hits and misses so you can narrow down your strike zone. The bottom grid is where you place your ships and mark your opponents called shots and the hits to your vessels.

You and your opponent both begin the game by placing your battleships onto the bottom grids. Once you are both ready, you will begin to play the game. The player that goes first will call out a number and a letter that refers to a single grid location. The opponent will grab a peg and locate the called spot and place the peg. They will then relay to you if you hit or miss the ship at which point you place a peg on your top grid to keep track of your shots and the positions of your opponent's ships.

When a ship has been filled with red pegs, it is destroyed but left on the grid. Once all of the ships on either side have been destroyed, the player with ships remaining wins the game.

What is Battleship Folio

This version of Battleship is played the same way as the classic one that we know and love. The only real difference is that it is portable and, unlike other portable versions, is encased in a soft case that closes with a zipper.

When you want to play, you only have to unzip the case and open it up. All of the pieces to play the game are safely tucked away. When you are done with the game, you just replace the pieces in their compartments, fold the case up and close the zipper.

What Comes in the Game

Battleship Folio includes the following pieces:

  • One grid board containing 2 grids for each player complete with an ocean graphic
  • Red pegs to chart hits
  • White pegs to chart misses
  • 2 compartments to store the white and red pegs
  • A secure area to store the ships
  • 10 plastic ships

Battleship Strategy

Playing Battleship requires luck as well as strategy. Most players have an instinctual nature to place the ships far apart. This means that the ships tend to be close to the edges of the grids. Many players will also place their ships going toward the center instead of along the vertical grid lines. Study your grid and attack their ships using a wave patter beginning with the middle numbers and letters then working out. Statistically your odds are better to strike a ship.
