What’s more frustrating than having a game night with the family only to find that the board game rules are not in the box? You go through every game you own looking for the rules just in case you put them in the wrong box. You rip apart your game chest and shelves looking for them because maybe, just maybe, they have fallen behind something. If you don’t find them, then it’s obvious that the board game gnomes took them and are having fun with the guys who stole your socks from the dryer. No need to throw away the game because replacement board game rules are easy to get.
Make Some Calls
Your phone is your most handy tool in the home so pick it up and dial away. Look on the game box and flip it over. Below the UPC code you may find two things:
- The website of the manufacturer
- The phone number of the manufacturer
If you are not in immediate need for the game rules then use the number you found on the box to call the manufacturer. Most game companies have a replacement game rules extension. For a fee and a shipping cost, they will mail you out a new set in about 4 to 6 weeks. You can also check their website if you need the game rules right away. You will also need to have a copy of Adobe Acrobat.
For games like the new Clue you won’t have much difficulty locating the rules because the big game companies typically publish their rules online. The game companies listed below have their game rules online for free download:
- Pressman Toy Company: They have board game rules for their most popular games as well as older games. Some of the games they have instructions for include Deal or No Deal, Topple, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Mansion Game, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Zathura: The Game and even Checkers, Backgammon, Othello and many more.
- Hasbro: The Hasbro toy company has long since been producing board games by acquiring other companies that make them like Avalon Hill, Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley. You are able to search for your game by name, and you need Adobe Acrobat in order to open the PDF file format that the board game rules come in.
- University Games: This game company specializes in educational games. They have the majority of their games listed on their site with fully downloadable game rules.
Classic Games, Older Games and Out of Print Board Game Rules
Finding board game rules for games that have long since fizzled and gone the way of the dodo bird is not difficult at all. There are several websites that take a lot of time tracking down game rules for games that have been forgotten either by age or because the manufacturer has neglected to provide that information for download.
- Central Connect’s Game Cabinet: These guys have a large list of games that they provide free downloadable instructions for. You can download rules for Men are From Mars, Mousetrap, and Parcheesi among many others.
- Darwin’s Game Closet: This website, unfortunately, is not for free. If the game rules consist of 10 or less pages they charge $4.00 and anything above 10 pages costs $8.00, but they do provide printed instructions that are professionally put together and mailed to you. Their list of games is immense and totals in the 100 and includes games like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bureaucracy, Care Bears and so much more. They have about 80% of all known game rules, and if you don’t see the game you need, you can e-mail a request to them.
- Board Game Capital: This is a nice resource that has some of the more popular game rules available for download, including Risk, Candyland, Civilization and Monopoly among others.
If by chance the above sites don’t have what you need, you can try using a search engine like Google. This is especially useful if you’re looking for game instructions for older versions of current favorites like Monopoly.
