Board Games for Boys
From LoveToKnow BoardGames
There are many board games for boys that can be excellent choices to replace video games or simply play on rainy days. What did boys play years ago when there weren’t video games available? Was it possible that boys found human interaction through games that simply made you move pieces around a board or roll some dice? Of course they did! Some of the games below are tried and true games that have stood the test of time for a few reasons:
- They are easy to learn.
- They can be found everywhere.
- It's hard to find someone that doesn't like at least one of the games.
Classic Board Games for Boys
Risk
What boy doesn't dream of conquering the world? Whether it's metaphorical or not, you can get him started with Risk. This game is a good combination of strategy and luck and decision-making. Roll the die and decide what countries you attack and defend. Risk has been extremely popular since 1959, and it doesn't look like there's any stopping it. The best thing about this game is that over the past 10 years or so, you have been able to find theme Risk games like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars.
Battleship
Keeping with the domination theme is Battleship. It's a one-on-one game where you try to—you know what's coming—"sink battleships". On each turn you guess a position, and your opponent either says "hit" or "you've sunk my battleship." The person who sinks all the opponent's battleships wins. This board game for boys is good because it teaches memory and deduction.
Chess
It's never too soon to teach a boy Chess. This extreme thinking game has spawned young prodigies and millions of children players worldwide. It may seem daunting at first for a child and for the parent teaching it, so the best way is to make it fun and light. Use chess puzzles, picture books, and fun boards to keep your son interested in the game.
Monopoly
Since every child should learn the value of money, why not show them how with Monopoly? This is an easy game to learn and teaches your son how to save money and how to spend it wisely.
Dungeons and Dragons
Yes, this is still a wonderful experience for any boy. Create characters, live in an imaginative world, and develop storylines that will encourage your son to keep playing. You can still find plenty of books (many revised multiple times over the years) on D&D and helpful scenarios specially made for children. Barnes & Noble always keeps a nice stock of this series.
Unique Games
Disney Scene It
How about an interactive trivia game? Scene It is one part board game and one part participation. The DVD that comes with the game has clips, fill-in-the-blanks, pictures, and more from a huge number of Disney movies. Players must answer questions, guess words and pictures, and name movies in order to be the best. The Disney version of Scene It is a great board game for boys and for entire families.
Othello
Another easy game to pick up is Othello. Two colors, a few simple rules, and a uniform board. That's all there is to this game. Boys will probably like the one-on-one aspect of it, and this game can teach them patience and critical thinking.
Khet: The Laser Game
For something totally different, there's Khet. This Chess-like game is played on an 80-square board. You move pieces around and attempt to use your laser at certain points to "checkmate" the Pharaoh. What boy wouldn't like this? It's got battles and lasers. You can also get the game in a 3D format.
Selection
When choosing board games for boys, you should keep their interests in mind. For example, if you think he might like Risk, then get him the Transformers edition because he's obsessed with Transformers. That way, he'll enjoy play the game because he can relate it to some he really likes. The best way to get your son to play any of the above games, however, is to play along with him and/or get the family involved..
