Buy War of the Ring Board Game
From LoveToKnow BoardGames
With all the Lord of the Rings gaming merchandise out there, buying War of the Ring board game is a little different but can be a companion to Lord of the Rings board game. You can get video games, role playing games, and computer games based on Tolkein’s universe, but there are limited board games available. War of the Ring fills that void with a strategy board game, like when you play Risk with a straight-forward way to win, though sometimes people get tripped up in figuring out which pieces are theirs because the colors of the pieces are so close together for each side.
Rules
War of the Ring Board game is a two to four player game that will take up about two to three hours of your life at a time. The game is intended for two players, but there are variations for three and four players. There are two sides to play: one player is the Free Peoples and the other player is the Shadow Armies.
Each player shuffles the event cards and places them on the map to start the game Gandalf leads the Free Peoples Army, which starts in Rivendell. Sauron is in charge of the Shadow Armies and are about ready to go to war at Isengard. The other groups of the Shadow Armies are at different time lengths away from going to war. The Free People armies have five different groups while the Shadow Armies have three.
Turn Phases
Event Phase
Each player draws two event cards. There is a limit of six event cards that a player can hold, so if the limit is over, the player must discard.
Fellowship Phase
The Free Peoples must either activate a group or choose from the following actions: declare where the fellowship is, heal the fellowship, change the guide, or do nothing. If the fellowship is declared as a stronghold, this stronghold is marked on the political track. In order to heal a fellowship, the group must be declared in a stronghold and one point of corruption is removed. Changing the guide requires the players to choose between characters with the highest levels.
Hunt Allocation Phase
The player who controls the Shadow Armies can put action dice on the board up to the number of fellowship members. If the Free Peoples player decides to move his fellowship, the action dice will be used to go after the ring.
Action Roll Phase
Both players roll their action die in order to see what they need to do next. Have Gandalf or Aragorn and the Mouth of Sauron, the Witch-King or Sarumon will get each player an extra roll.
Resolution Phase
- Army: Move armies to territories, attack, siege, or deploy an Army event card.
- Character: Move the army a characters controls, attack with the same army, or deploy a character even card.
- Muster: Move a nation forward on the political track, or recruit units to refresh armies.
- Event: Draw or play an event card.

- Will of the West: The Free Peoples only can choose any action or use special cards.
