Classics Have Staying Power

In order to be considered a classic, a board game needs to have been played by a large audience of game players for many years. Many classic games have been played since the 1940s with some, such as Monopoly from 1935, Chess dating back to the 1400s, and Parchessi dating back to 4 AD.

To have such staying power and to be accepted as a fun way to spend time, a classic game tends to have specific features:

  • Easy to Play – The game is not difficult to learn and can be easily played by people with a variety of intellectual abilities.
  • Broad Audience – People of different ages, interests and abilities enjoy playing the game.
  • Multiple Variations of Play – There are a variety of ways to play and win the game, making each game time a unique adventure.
  • Widely Available – The game can be easily obtained in a variety of retail and geographic locations throughout the world.

Classic Board Games

The classic games are varied in the style of play with some being dice-based, some being designed as two-player games, and some designed specifically for children.

Some of the most well-known, classic games include:

  • Aggravation – A dice-based marble race that includes various shortcuts including the ability to shoot right across the board.
  • Backgammon – A two-player, dice-based strategy game in which players decide which games pieces to move across, and then off, the game board.
  • Battleship – A two-player naval combat strategy game in which each player commands their own fleet of ships while they track down their enemy and attack.
  • Candyland – A favorite children's race game in which players take a magical journey through a colorful candy-laden countryside.
  • Checkers – A two-player strategy game in which players move their game pieces diagonally across the board, capturing their opponent's game pieces along the way.
  • Chess – A two-player strategy game that simulates medieval warfare while players move their pieces across the board in a variety of allowable directions to capture the opponent's pieces.
  • Chinese_Checkers – A multi-player strategy game where players jump over their own pieces as well as the pieces of their opponents while attempting to move all of their pieces to the opposite side of the game board.
  • Chutes and Ladders – An easy-to-play counting and number recognition game for children with the ability to move quickly around the board using chutes and ladders placed throughout the game board.
  • Clue – A dice-based murder mystery game in which players move from room to room trying to determine the murderer, the weapon used and the location of the murder.
  • Life – A dice-based experience-based game in which players are given various options that can have a variety of effects on their economic success in playing the game.
  • Monopoly – A dice-based real estate game in which players buy properties, build houses and hotels on the properties and then collect rent from other players when they land on the properties.
  • Parcheesi – A dice-based, multi-player game where players move their pawns around the board, trying to avoid capture while they return their pawns to their home position. Parchessi is the national game of India.
  • Pictionary – A multi-player, team-based drawing-based version of Charades in which players draw pictures to give clues to their team members.
  • Scrabble – A multi-player word game in which players draw letter tiles and then take turn forming words on the game board using their own tiles and combining their tiles with tiles that have been placed on the game board by their opponents.
  • Sorry – A race game in which players turn over a card to determine their move and then move their game piece around the board, with the ability to switch places with other players and knock other players off the track.
  • Trivial Pursuit – A trivia game in which players receive colored answer pieces in exchange for correctly answering questions on a variety of subjects.
  • Twister – An action game in which players take turns playing their feet and hands on specific colored dots on a large vinyl playing mat.
  • Yahtzee – A dice-based game in which players use five dice while trying to roll specific combinations of the dice.

One of the wonderful things about classic board games is that they are readily available for purchase, both as new games and as used games from garage sales and second-hand retailers such as eBay and thrift shops.
