What Does Egypt Mean to You

Egypt is a land of mystery that is as rich in culture as it is in the history that can teach us about our world before the modern age. Making a board game about Egypt can go in so many directions from being historically accurate to taking some liberties to create a game filled with suspense and mystery. Look at the country and understand what it means to you. What senses does it create? What questions does it make you want to ask? You can use all of that to go into creating board games for Egypt.

Creating Board Games For Egypt

There are two versions of games you may want to consider when creating a board game with Egypt as the focal point. You can either go for a trivial pursuit type of game, or you can go with a traditional dice roller.

Trivial Pursuit Style

Creating a board game that is similar to Trivial Pursuit is not all that difficult. This type of game is great if you are a teacher and your subject matter includes learning about Egypt.

Use the following steps to create your own trivia style game:

  • You will need something that will become your game board. There are a few stores on the Internet that sell retail quality blank boards. If you don't want to go that route, you can make your own using plain white foam board. You can find this at many stores including Wal-Mart, Target, AC Moore or Michael's Craft. You can also pick some up at any art supply store. Cut the foam board in half to make it the proper size.
  • Gather your thoughts and design what your actual board game will look like. You can use Photoshop to do this. Once you are happy with the layout, you can print it out on sticker paper and affix it to the blank board you have acquired.
  • Now that you have your game board, you will need to create your questions for the game. Use the best resource that you have--the Internet. You can use index cards for your questions or print them on glossy cardstock and cut them out. Feel free to create multiple categories to be more like Trivial Pursuit. Some categories could include the following:
    • Pharaohs
    • Myths and Legends
    • Technology
    • Ancient Egypt
    • Curse of the Mummy
    • Archaeology
  • Once you have your board and your cards, you will need your pieces and dice. Those same companies where you buy blank boards also sell your accessory pieces like dice and pawns.

Action Game

Trivia games are great but often not all that exciting. If you want something more fun, then create a board game about Egypt by utilizing myths and legends as your jumping off point? When you think about Egypt, what's the first thing that comes to mind? It’s usually one of two things:

  1. The Pyramids at Giza
  2. Mummies

With these two things in mind, you can create several interesting board games. They can be as scary or as lighthearted as you want them to be. If you are planning a family game night that involves small children, then stick to fun instead of scary. Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Race to the Pyramids- This game idea can be a simple track game where you have your board labeled with movement squares. As a simple dice roller, you can make spaces that can advance your token or make it retreat. You can also have spaces to cause a loss of turns and the like. First player to reach the pyramid wins.
  • Mummy Escape- The curse of the mummy has always been a part of Egyptian folklore. It has been covered in many Hollywood movies and the like. This game could focus around a group of archaeologists who have entered a pyramid and unwittingly woke up the bloodthirsty mummy! You roll the dice and make your characters. The dice gets rolled again, and the mummy moves. The board would look like the catacombs of the pyramid. The first one that gets out wins, and the others are just left for the mummy to take care of.
