From LoveToKnow BoardGames

Free board game instructions are relatively easy to find on the Internet. You can sometimes find scanned copies of the actual instructions, or you can often find files that someone has typed up. No matter what game you are seeking instructions for, you are likely to discover something that will help. Old games and new games alike have free board game instructions online.

The Monopoly Game

Free Board Game Instructions from the Game Makers

One of the first options is to contact the makers of the game. Most manufacturers are all too happy to send you a copy of the instructions because they want you to keep playing their game! This is especially useful if you are a board game collector and want to have all the original pieces, including instructions, of the game.

BoardGameGeek.com

For the ultimate database of board games, check out Board Game Geek. This website has just about every board game listed on its site, including those rare and obscure ones that you can only find locally sometimes. Just type the game you are looking for in the search engine and up pops some of the game listings (hopefully, right?). The pages tend to be a little busy with advertising, but you should be able to find free board game instructions. Most of them are located within the file's section of each game page. Just download it to your computer, open it (most are in .pdf or .doc), and you may be able to play your forgotten game in no time.

D'Antiques

If you didn't think it was possible to have every board game's instruction manual available for download, then you haven't seen D'Antiques. Whether in HTML form (web browser) or an actual document, you should be able to find instructions for just about any game. There are the popular games like Monopoly and Risk, but you can also find free board game instructions for games from way back in the past like Chessers, a game from the 1960's that combined Chess and Checkers into one fast pace game. Total, there are about 750 game represented.

Game Cabinet

For some rules on board games and card games, go to Game Cabinet. The selection of games is light, but you can find some board game instructions for card games that also use a board to play. Some are obscure games, but you may find regular rules and some variations on many popular games.

Board Game Central

For another large database of board games go to Board Game Central. Probably 90% of the games are represented with instructions, rules, variations, and other links. One thing that sets Board Game Central apart from the other sites is that it also includes rules and instructions for software games. This site essentially tells how to navigate through and use various programs for board games. You can also download the programs for trial-use from the website.

Some Last Resorts

For some reason, if the Internet can't supply you with some copy of the rules or the manufacturer won't send you another copy, then there are a couple of other ways to get those instructions.

  1. While not free, you can purchase the game again if it is something that is carried at all times in retail stores.
  2. Do you know any friends that have the game? Borrow the instructions, and photocopy them. If none of your friends have it, then ask them to put the word out that you are looking for "XYZ" game rules.
  3. The Internet is visited by billions of people everyday. Utilize that density by submitting your requests to forums. Board Game Geek and Board Game Central are the top board game sites out there and have an immense following. It's very possible that someone perusing the forums has the board game instructions you might be looking for.

The Rules are out There

Somewhere, somehow, the instructions you need are out there. The popular games are easy to find, but it's those rare games that you need to diligently search for. Don't give up; the rules are out there.
