What is Scattergories

Scattergories is a word challenge game that tests how fast you think on your feet with nothing more than a letter, a piece of paper and a timer. The game of Scattergories is a very simple premise that even children could play. The game can be played with two players but is more fun with a group or as teams.

Scattergories was first published in 1988 by Milton Bradley with newer versions currently under license to Hasbro. The game rewards creative thinking and word usage which makes it a great educational game for the classroom in helping to increase your vocabulary.

The Rules of Scattergories

The premise is simple: Complete the full category list with as many unique words as you can. Game play flows like this:

  1. All players take a folder with card #1 facing up (there are 4 cards, each with 3 categories per side) and a pencil.
  2. The timer is set, then the button is pushed to stop it from counting down.
  3. One player rolls the 20-sided letter die to choose the "key" letter.
  4. Start the timer.
  5. Fill in the category boxes with answers that begin with the key letter.
  6. Once the time is done, it’s all pencils down.
  7. Each player takes a turn reading off their answers.
  8. The player with the most unique answers wins this first round.
  9. After three rounds, or one completed card, the player with the total number of points wins.

If you wish to play a full game of Scattergories online, you will have to modify the game from the original rules, but this can make for a very fun experience.
