Characteristics of Great Board Games

A lot of different games come and go, but some classic board games grow more popular each time a new player is introduced. But what makes a board game great?

  • Challenge Level: The best board games are easy enough for novice players to enjoy right from the start, but still have challenging elements that are fun for more experienced players.
  • Number of Players: Most of the best loved board games can accommodate a wide range of players without changing the rules of play or the level of enjoyment. This ensures that both small and large groups can enjoy a great game.
  • Longevity: While many board games introduce specialty versions themed to current pop culture trends, the classic versions of the most loved board games are just as popular today as when they were introduced.
  • Teaching Value: A hidden characteristic of most beloved board games is their inherent educational value. Subtle lessons incorporated into rolls of the die or trips around the board make these games great additions to any family’s activities.

Enjoying Your Favorite Games

With the busy schedules most family members have today, finding time to enjoy a favorite game can be difficult. These tips will help give a favorite game a place of honor and enjoyment in a family’s routine.

  • Establish a regular “game night” weekly, monthly, or otherwise as frequently as schedules permit. Set the date and time far enough in advance so that everyone can plan around the event.
  • Restrict distractions during the game night: turn off cell phones, televisions, video games, and other potential interruptions.
  • Choose a comfortable location to play with adequate seating and light for everyone to participate.
  • Rotate which family member chooses the game to play so everyone has the opportunity to enjoy their favorite games.
  • Provide snacks and drinks to make game night a full event rather than crammed between other daily activities.

From fun competitions to clever teaching tools, the most loved board games are enjoyable for all ages and ability levels. By choosing the best games for everyone to play and establishing a fun event centered on these favorite games, a game night can become a treasured family tradition that allows even more board games to be explored.

Comments

We have an old wooden game board painted in a checker pattern. Instead of being 8 squares by 8 squares as for checkers and chess this board is 10 squares by 10 squares. What game would this have been used for?
