All you need for a printable board game are simple supplies.

Making Your Own Printables

Some sites will allow you to customize your own game boards or print out themed boards and cards that you can use to play a game with your own rules. For especially young children, this is a good option because they can learn more about rules in games and experiment with what happens when they make up their own rules. They may also enjoy moving a token around a board without having to read specific directions or remember a lot of complicated rules.

Using these templates is also helpful if you want to play a game you already know and can use a generic board for it. Checkers and chess are two examples of popular games that use generic square boards with alternating colors.

Kinds of Printable Games

There are several varieties of printable board games to make. Some of the most common are word games, puzzles or mazes, and memory or question games.

Word Games

Sometimes similar to Scrabble or Boggle, these games will challenge participants to work with words when competing with others. They may involve unscrambling words, playing with anagrams, using the letters of one word to make other words, doing Mad Libs, or searching for words in a puzzle or word search. Crosswords are also included in this category.

Puzzles and Mazes

These games have specific instructions and are often designed for just one player. Some of these puzzles are hidden pictures, connect-the-dots puzzles, tic tac toe, and visual mazes. Sometimes, a puzzle will consist of a series of visual clues that will help a participant work out a mystery or find the answer to a puzzle.

Memory and Question Games

Some of the most common games in this category are matching games. In these printables, you can print out a series of marching cards, turn them upside down, and alternate flipping them over with other players. When a player finds a pair, he or she gets to keep the cards. Other memory games involve quizzing about knowledge, asking trivia questions, and inviting players to study a scene before answering detailed questions about it.

These board games and many other types are just a few clicks away, so the next time the rain is pouring down and you're looking for something to do, try one out!
