Scrabble Cheating
From LoveToKnow BoardGames
Scrabble cheating can have a lot of different meanings – from hiding tiles in your pants pocket to peeking at software programs on your cell phone that help you identify words using specific tiles. If you decide you want to "cheat" at Scrabble, be sure you know your options.
Setting the Ground Rules
Scrabble is one of those board games which lends itself to a lot of different player personalities and skill levels. All of these Scrabble players can have their own opinion of the level of help or Scrabble cheating which they will condone during a game. Some players require the words to appear in the "official" Scrabble dictionary before their opponent can take the full score of all the points of the word formed by the newly-played tiles. Other players refuse to allow a dictionary of any kind to be used during the game.
Help for Scrabble Cheating
Regardless of your position on Scrabble help or cheating, there are several really helpful tools available.
Scrabble Dictionaries
Some players have set their personal Scrabble rules to allow a dictionary to be used for word look-up. Other players will go even farther and allow the use of a dictionary as a tool to research potential letter combinations. The following dictionaries would be good reference tools for both types of players:
- The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary – This 700+ page book highlights the words accepted under the official Scrabble rules. It is a great tool to settle any disputes that arise about whether a word placed on the board is playable.
- The Official Scrabble Brand Word-Finder – Not a dictionary per se, but this handy book contains the words which are acceptable under Scrabble rules, formatted to help a player build words from his or her available tiles.
Software Tools
There are many online tools available for Scrabble players. These are very handy when you are playing online Scrabble. They can be equally handy if you have a computer nearby while you play the traditional board version of the game. Even if a player doesn't condone Scrabble cheating, these programs can make great learning tools. Here are a few examples of how they are often used:
- Each player can be given a set number of times which he or she can use the online tool during the game.
- A player can agree to skip a turn in exchange for a one-time use of the online tool.
- Players can be limited to only using the tools after the game to see where they could have garnered additional points by placing different word combinations on the board.
There are many Scrabble help tools on the Internet. Here are a few:
- Scrabble Dictionary and Word Builder – These are two great tools from Hasbro, the toy company that publishes Scrabble. All you need to do is enter a word, or part of a word, and you will quickly be given ideas for complete words that can be made with the letters you have entered.
- Scrabble Helper – This site is designed to give word ideas. You can enter all the letters from your available tiles. You can also use this tool to obtain ideas of how to create words from open letters on the board.
Cell Phone Applications
- Scrabble Helper– This is a fun, simple application for cell phones which can quickly identify words to make with your unplayed tiles. It is also very helpful to build words with specific letter combinations, like a word ending in U. A built-in Scrabble dictionary is also included. Scrabble Helper also has a handy feature that lets you enter blank tiles to help you decide their best usage. This application is also available in an online version.
No matter where you sit philosophically on the subject of Scrabble cheating, it will probably make for a better game if your opponent shares your views. Even you don't believe in cheating, using word builder tools is also a great way to increase your vocabulary for Scrabble – which will help make you a winning player.
