Sequence Game
From LoveToKnow BoardGames
The Sequence game is a strategy board game that has been around since 1982 and has won a few awards to boot. The rules are easy to learn (it is essentially a fancy version of Tic-Tac-Toe), but there is more strategy than you might expect since it does have decks of cards that spur gameplay.
Box Contents
The Sequence game comes with the following:
- A decent-sized play board with representations of the cards in a deck, except without the Jacks or Jokers pictured.
- 135 colored chips (50 blue and green each, and 35 red)
- Instructions.
Sequence Game Rules
You can play with two or three players, or two or three teams. Competitors are dealt three to seven cards (depending on how many players are available). When you play a card on a subsequent turn, you place your colored chip on the spot where your card is on the gameboard. A sequence is formed when five chips of the same color are consecutive in a row, column or diagonally. You or your team must create a sequence before your opponents do.
Each round goes like this: a player selects a card from his hand to play, sets the chip on the gameboard, discards that card, and then replaces that card. NOTE: If you have only two players or two teams, then two sequences must be created to win the game.
Special Cards and Squares
The Jack is a unique card in that it allows you to perform special moves. If you have a two-eyed Jack that you want to play, you are able to place your chip anywhere on the gameboard, except on one of the four corners. If you have the one-eyed Jack, then you can remove an opponent's chip and replace it with yours.
Is There Strategy?
There is some strategy. You'll want to keep an eye on your opponent's gameplay because you may need to block when needed or bluff on an area of the board. Since there is no talking during the game, it also helps if you and your teammates have played together before or have worked out a strategy earlier.
While most of the game requires some luck, you can make the best of the cards by trying to save cards that are close together so that you can work towards a sequence.
Variations and Versions of Sequence
There are a number of Sequence variations, all of which are just as fun.
- Travel Sequence-The same as the large version just in a folding travel case with pegs that lock into the board instead of chips.
- Sequence States and Capitals-Same goal: five chips in a row. The board has all 50 states and their capitals instead of cards. And guess what, the cards are the states and capitals also!
- Sequence 25th Anniversary Edition-The game comes with heavier chips and a nice, handled carrying case.
- Jumbo Sequence-Everything is bigger: the mat is jumbo, the chips are larger, and the cards are easier to see.
- Deluxe Edition Sequence-The game comes with a cushioned mat and crowning chips that are reversible.
- Sequence for Kids-An easier version to play, with cartoon characters instead of playing cards. There are dragons and unicorns that you have to match up. There are less cards and chips to play, and the kids only have to get four in a row.
- Sequence Dice-The board is 6x6 (because it uses dice). The rules are a little different. The numbers 2, 12, 10, and 11 aren't on the board. If you roll a 2 or 12, you get another roll. Get a 10, take an opponent's chip away. If you get an 11, you can put your chip on any number. Still, you have to get five in a row.
Many Ways to Play
All the versions and variations of Sequence are easy to play and understand. The only thing you might have to get use to is the no talking rule. Shh, no talking.
